Monica Wants to Draw – Liebster Award!

I had a really tough week last week unfortunately had a short stay in hospital, however i woke up in my own bed on Saturday morning to discover that Monica had nominated me for a Liebster Award who has a lovely blog called Monica Wants to Draw. It made me smile and warmed my heart that I had even been thought of  so thank you so much Monica.

I don’t know how the Liebster Award started. But it is a recognition and appreciation of blogs of small audiences by another blogger. Kind of like celebrating that mom and pop shop you like so much, that make you feel so at home. Or that lovely bakery round the village corner that you miss so much when you move to the big city.

Nothing big. No fancy stuff. Just celebrating simple, ordinary things we like. But simple and ordinary things made beautiful and special because each blogger had spoke with a true voice. And because of that, we feel we share something. And there is an affirmation of our common humanity.

“Better to write for yourself and have no public, than to write for the public and have no self.” (Cyril Connolly)

As we write, draw and publish, we try to remember to be true to ourselves. Despite having only a small audience. Or having no audience. Even if we have just one person reading, we know that audience is true. Only thus, can our work bring us closer to ourselves.

“All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence you know.” (Ernest Hemingway)”

And I celebrate by naming 5 other blogs I enjoy for the Liebster Award:

Learning to draw from zero
About

Hi! I am Monica and I am learning to draw from zero experience.

On my list of “things to do before I die” is to learn how to draw and paint. (Do you have such a list? You should!)  So I thought I may as well get on with it.

I am 100% novice but decided to start this blog anyway to journal my learning progress and discoveries. Someone once said that the woods would be very silent if no birds sang except those that sang best. So I am adding my twitter to the cacophony just to have some fun. And if Van Gogh can, maybe so can I!

My name is Anne and I’am living in Denmark.

I’am thrilled by working with ink washes. You can control it, but only to a certain point, then you just have to let it go. Sometimes that is how life can be too..

I love simplicity and working fast, which shows in my ink work.

I have just entered the world of painting with acrylics. I’am going to share this journey with you.

Drawing Pains

Where you can see my growth as an artist…no matter how painful it may be

A Motivational Interlude

I’ll get back to posting drawings shortly, but I had read this article a while back and thought I would share it.  Just speaking for myself, I find it very intimidating to share my art (note: the term art is used very loosely here) and as a result it makes me very self-conscious when I know others are looking at my work.  There are many things that give me the confidence to make this blog and share my work now (not the least of which is the inherent anonymity that comes with posting on the internet) and one of those things is what I took from this article written by Roger Ebert.  Enjoy.

You can draw, and probably better than I can

Another view of an ear

Another view of the ear

Finished on 4th April 2010 – I used black and lavender col-erase colour pencils

This view took about 50 mins to complete mainly because the pencils really need building up layer on layer. I am doing the full rotation of the head from face looking forward to back of head looking at you 🙂 I will come back and do a similar series on the eyes and nose and mouth.

Various practice portraits
